3-D Modeling Capabilities

Schmidt Electric Co., Inc. (SEC)'s Pre-Construction Design & Coordination Team is comprised of a wide range of talent and expertise: including master electricians, seasoned journeymen, project managers, MEP designers, architects, and VDC specialists; all of whom are familiar with the latest AEC design software, virtual design & construction procedures, BIM technology, and integrated processes. The members of this elite team have been using 3D CAD modeling for space management since 2008, and the CAD Operators within the Pre-Construction Design & Coordination Team have +50 years of combined experience with 3D modeling. Schmidt Electric Co., Inc. has successfully modeled numerous multi-million dollar projects in 3D, including several projects with complex space limitations.


Schmidt Electric Co., Inc. utilizes the latest in AutoCAD® 3D and 2D technology to design projects in order to minimize conflicts with all other trades, while maximizing productivity along with space management for any future installations. Tools, such as clash detection and space management monitoring, significantly reduce costs, as rework and change orders are almost entirely avoided. Schmidt Electric Co., Inc. generally utilizes Navisworks® renderings as a project walk-through tool in order to understand the overall installation, as well as gain vital insight on detailed issues or conflicts. 3D modeling also provides construction information data for scheduling and trade sequencing purposes.


Typically, Schmidt Electric Co., Inc.'s design process begins with the extraction of the 3D backgrounds from the REVIT® model. Using the 3D backgrounds, our CAD operators create the 3D electrical model using AutoCAD® MEP, and coordinate with other trades using a combined REVIT®/ AutoCAD® MEP Navisworks® file. Once the coordination process is complete Schmidt Electric Co., Inc. will create shop drawings and coordination drawing sets from the AutoCAD® MEP 3D model. Schmidt Electric's usual level of detail is as follows:

  • Provide routing for all panel feeders 2" and larger.
  • Provide routing for bus duct if applicable.
  • Provide routing for cable tray if applicable.
  • Provide models of all electrical gear and associated maintenance spaces.
  • Provide layout of required housekeeping pads and equipment in electrical rooms.
  • Provide space allocation of zones for conduit racks from panels. (Conduit < 2")

Schmidt is currently using the following 3D CAD software:

  • Autodesk AutoCAD® MEP 2009 - 2011
  • Autodesk REVIT® MEP 2009 - 2011
  • Autodesk Navisworks® 2009 - 2011


In addition to powerful software, Schmidt Electric Co., Inc. has a large format printer/color scanner (KIP9000), a large format color inkjet plotter (Canon iPF720), and a secure FTP server to facilitate the reproduction and distribution of project information.


Building Information Modeling

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an integrated process for exploring a project's key physical and functional characteristics digitally prior to construction, thereby helping to deliver projects faster and more economically, while minimizing environmental impact. Coordinated, consistent information is used throughout the process: to design innovative solutions; to better visualize and simulate real-world appearance, performance, and cost; and to create more accurate documentation. Schmidt Electric Co., Inc.'s experiences to date have built our passion for the BIM process, and we have moved aggressively to incorporate Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, and Navisworks as our BIM platforms of choice.


Using BIM processes, Schmidt Electric Co., Inc. is able to develop, visualize, analyze, and validate innovative building solutions that satisfy our client's goals for performance, appearance, and cost. The primary benefit of BIM stems from Schmidt Electric Co., Inc.'s ability to participate in cross-disciplinary design coordination with the project architect and other members of the extended design team. Using BIM processes in this manner will simplify early decision making, improve cross-discipline clash detection, and aid in construction planning and scheduling; ultimately delivering a more reliable product in a shorter time frame, in an economical and environmentally friendly manner.


SEC's commitment to BIM relies on the use of Autodesk building information modeling (BIM) solutions, including REVIT® MEP 2011, AutoCAD® MEP 2011 and Navisworks® Manage 2011 software solutions, to collaborate with extended design teams on large-scale projects.
